From Fear to Fascination: Teaching Dominica’s Children to Love the Sea
children standing on a beach getting ready to go snorkeling

In a nation celebrated as the “Nature Isle,” a surprising paradox existed: many Dominicans, surrounded by the sparkling Caribbean Sea, had never seen the wonders that lay beneath its surface. For many, the ocean was a source of apprehension, not inspiration. Dr. Auliana Poon saw this as a critical disconnect. If Dominica was to truly live up to its brand, its own people had to be the primary stewards of its natural treasures.

“You cannot protect what you don’t value,” Dr. Poon famously stated during her work on the EU-funded Eco-Tourism Development Project. “And you cannot value what you don’t know about or see.”

This simple, powerful philosophy became the driving force behind the “Snorkeling for Kids” initiative. The problem was clear: a generation of children was growing up disconnected from their most precious natural asset. The solution had to be hands-on, accessible, and, most importantly, fun.

Working in the village of Scotts Head, a prime snorkeling location, Leve Global helped orchestrate a community-led program. On the first Sunday of every month, children from across the island were invited to come and experience the magic of the underwater world for free. The European Union provided the snorkeling equipment, and local dive instructors, inspired by the vision, volunteered their time and expertise.

What started as a small local initiative quickly blossomed into a powerful movement. Children who had once been fearful of the water were now eagerly exploring the vibrant coral reefs, their eyes wide with wonder at the kaleidoscope of colours and life. They were not just learning to swim; they were learning to love the ocean. They were becoming the future guardians of Dominica’s marine environment, ensuring that the island’s natural heritage would be protected for generations to come. It was a perfect demonstration of the Leve Global ethos: empowerment begins at the grassroots, creating a ripple effect that can transform a nation.
